Guide

When is tobacco actually on sale in Lisbon?

There is no single legal opening-hours rule for tobacco in Portugal — each retail category sets its own hours. The practical result is that daytime is easy and the middle of the night is genuinely hard.

In short

Tobacco retail in Lisbon follows the opening hours of each type of shop rather than a dedicated tobacco schedule: cafés and kiosks generally open earliest and some run into the evening, supermarkets follow standard retail hours and usually close by night, and most tabacarias keep daytime-to-evening hours too. Very few licensed points stay open right through the small hours, which is why late-night and overnight tobacco access in Lisbon is genuinely limited — a gap that a WhatsApp-ordered, hand-delivered service operating 19h–05h is built to cover, with age verification at the door exactly as at any counter.

Key points

  • Tobacco hours follow each shop type's own opening hours, not a dedicated schedule.
  • Daytime has the most options; overnight has genuinely few.
  • Sundays and holidays typically mean shorter hours and some closures.
  • Cafés and kiosks in nightlife areas are the most likely to stay open late, but this varies night to night.

Daytime: the easy part

From mid-morning through the afternoon, tobacco is widely available across cafés, kiosks, tabacarias and supermarkets in every part of the city. This is the period with the most points of sale open simultaneously and the least uncertainty about finding one.

Evening: hours start to thin out

Supermarkets and many tabacarias close by early evening. Cafés and kiosks with longer hours, particularly in nightlife areas such as Bairro Alto or Cais do Sodré, remain the more reliable option, though which individual venues stay open varies night to night and is not something we track or guarantee.

Overnight: the genuine gap

Between roughly the small hours and early morning, very few licensed tobacco points of sale remain open in Lisbon. This is simply because most cafés, kiosks, tabacarias and supermarkets are closed at that time — it is not a special legal curfew on tobacco, just ordinary retail hours applied to an ordinary product.

Sundays and public holidays

Supermarket hours are often shorter on Sundays and holidays, and some independent tabacarias close entirely, particularly on major holidays. Cafés and kiosks are the categories most likely to stay open, though this again depends on the individual business.

Why this matters for planning ahead

If you know you'll want tobacco late at night, it is worth planning during the day rather than assuming a shop will be open when you need it — the number of open points of sale drops sharply after the evening in every part of Lisbon, tourist areas included.

Common questions

Is there a legal curfew on tobacco sales at night in Portugal?
No specific tobacco curfew exists; the scarcity of tobacco at night simply reflects ordinary shop opening hours.
Are supermarkets open 24 hours in Lisbon?
Very few, and even fewer keep their tobacco counter staffed through the night, since tobacco sale often requires a dedicated attendant.
What are your delivery hours?
We take orders on WhatsApp every day from 19h to 05h, covering the part of the night when physical tobacco retail is hardest to find.
