Alfama: Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood
Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake and kept its medieval layout: dead-end alleys, staircases and houses without a clear street number. Below you'll find what to expect if you're ordering from here.

What the area is like
Medieval layout
Streets that predate the 1755 earthquake and were never redesigned. Two addresses with the same street name can be five minutes apart on foot.
Staircases everywhere
From Escadinhas de São Miguel to Largo das Portas do Sol, most routes climb steps rather than roads.
Viewpoints and fado houses
Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia overlook the Tejo. Fado houses cluster in the streets below them.
Concentrated tourism
The viewpoints and the tram bring visitors into narrow corridors, especially in the middle of the day.
Getting around
- Tram 28 crosses the neighbourhood along Rua de São Tomé and Largo das Portas do Sol.
- The nearest metro stations are Santa Apolónia and Terreiro do Paço, both at the edge of the hill.
- Most streets are too narrow or too steep for a car; walking is the only way through the upper part.
- Door numbers are often worn or missing, so a nearby square or staircase is a more reliable reference than the address alone.
Typical hours
Morning
Quiet streets, mostly residents and deliveries to local cafés.
Afternoon
The main corridors around the viewpoints fill up with visitors.
Evening
Fado houses and small restaurants keep the lower streets active.
At night, 7pm to 5am
After 9pm the tour groups are gone and the alleys are quiet and poorly lit. Fado houses on Rua de São Miguel and around Largo de São Rafael keep some movement until roughly 1am; after that the hill is silent and the Portas do Sol viewpoint is the only obvious reference point left.
How to describe your location here
Give the nearest largo, staircase or viewpoint before the street number: Largo das Portas do Sol, Escadinhas de São Miguel, Largo de São Rafael, Chafariz de Dentro. Say which side of the hill you are on and whether the door is up or down from that point.

Questions about Alfama
- Why is a landmark useful for addresses in Alfama?
- Streets predate modern numbering and can repeat names across the hill, so a square or staircase nearby makes the address clearer.
- Can cars reach every street in Alfama?
- No. Many streets are stepped or too narrow for a car, so parts of the neighbourhood are only reachable on foot.
- What is the tram 28 route through Alfama?
- It runs along Rua de São Tomé and past Largo das Portas do Sol, connecting Alfama to Graça and to the Baixa.
