Martim Moniz: the flat square where several hills meet
Martim Moniz is a large open square at the point where Mouraria, Baixa and the streets below São Jorge castle all touch. It is one of the most recognisable meeting points in central Lisbon, day or night.
Coverage across the whole city of Lisbon.

What the area is like
A wide, flat square
Unlike almost everywhere around it, Martim Moniz itself is level ground, which makes it a natural landmark for anyone arriving from the surrounding hills.
Kiosks and stalls at street level
Food kiosks and small stalls line parts of the square and stay active into the evening, giving it steady lighting and foot traffic.
Gateway to three neighbourhoods
Mouraria rises to the east, the streets towards Intendente to the north, and Baixa's grid begins just south, so the square works as a shared reference for all of them.
Surrounding buildings mix old and new
Around the square, older apartment blocks sit next to renovated buildings and shopfronts, a visible sign of how much the area has changed in recent years.
Getting around
- Martim Moniz metro station, on the green line, opens directly onto the square.
- Tram 28 and several bus routes pass along or near the square on their way between Baixa and the eastern hills.
- Cars can reach the square itself easily, but the streets rising into Mouraria just beyond it narrow quickly.
- Because the square is a hub rather than a residential block, giving the side or corner of the square you're near is more useful than a number.
Typical hours
Daytime
Constant movement between the metro, the kiosks and the surrounding shopping streets.
Early evening
The square stays active as people pass through on their way home or towards Mouraria and Intendente.
Late
Quieter but rarely empty, with the metro entrance and a few kiosks still marking it clearly after dark.
At night, 7pm to 5am
Martim Moniz stays legible at night in a way its surrounding hills don't: the square is open, lit and used as a landmark by everyone nearby. The harder part is the first stretch off the square into Mouraria's alleys, where it's worth agreeing on a corner of the square itself as the meeting point.
How to describe your location here
Say which side of the square you're on — towards Mouraria, towards Baixa or towards the Intendente streets — and the nearest kiosk or shopfront. That is clearer here than any street number.
